TMX - Achievements & Badges
Goal
Design and launch TMX’s first gamification feature to increase engagement and retention among frontline team members. The aim was to make the app more enjoyable, encourage daily logins, and reward participation beyond performance goals through streaks, badges, and achievements tied to trivia and learning.

Overview
Context
The TMX app helps frontline team members track their performance and earn rewards for hitting store goals. Over time, usage patterns showed that most employees only opened the app to redeem points, leaving key engagement features underused. To strengthen retention and make the experience more enjoyable, we set out to add elements of gamification — features that would reward learning, consistency, and participation beyond basic goals.
Challenge
Our Daily Trivia feature was designed for store managers to test and reinforce knowledge around products, safety, and promotions. However, adoption was low, and most users didn’t find it engaging enough to return regularly. The challenge was to transform this underutilized feature into something fun and motivating — a reason for users to log in every day and feel rewarded for doing so.
Role
As the Senior Product Designer, I led the concept and design of TMX’s first gamification feature: Achievements and Streaks. Working closely with product management and engineering, I created a system that introduced streaks, badges, and milestones tied to trivia participation and engagement. My focus was on making the experience feel rewarding and intuitive while staying aligned with our broader business goals of increasing satisfaction and retention.
Design Process
Understanding Users
Data showed that daily active usage was low, with most engagement centered around reward redemption. In interviews, team members said they loved earning points but didn’t feel a reason to open the app unless they had a goal to check or a reward to claim. That insight led us to design a feature that offered instant feedback, small wins, and a sense of accomplishment — the kind of motivation that drives repeat behavior.
Exploration and Iteration
I began by mapping how streaks could fit naturally into existing trivia behavior, rewarding users for answering questions consistently over time. From there, I designed custom badge sets with unique colors, icons, and copy for each milestone — like “2 Weeks Strong” or “Monthly Master.” These badges added personality and gave users something tangible to aim for, turning learning into a fun daily ritual.
Collaboration and Validation
I partnered with product and engineering to refine the technical flow and ensure the streak tracking system integrated seamlessly with our trivia data. Once the first iteration was complete, we ran pilot tests to gauge response. The results were encouraging: users described it as “motivating” and “fun,” and early metrics showed a clear uptick in daily logins.
Outcome
Impact
The Achievements and Streaks feature helped reintroduce a sense of play into the TMX experience. Users were logging in more often, engaging with trivia, and sharing progress with their peers. For managers, it provided a simple way to encourage learning and recognize consistent participation.
Results
Post-launch engagement metrics showed an increase in daily activity, trivia completion, and time spent in-app. The success of this project paved the way for future gamification updates, including new badge categories and potential integrations with goal-based performance.
Reflection
This project reminded me how much design can influence motivation. By turning a learning feature into something rewarding and interactive, we were able to make the TMX app feel more alive — not just a tool for tracking goals, but a space for growth, recognition, and fun.
